TSC To Begin Training Junior Secondary School Teachers This January. The Teachers Service Commission has announced plans to kickstart training of junior secondary school teachers this January.
The teachers will be tasked with the mandate of handling junior secondary school students for the new curriculum. The retooling process will commence this January in a bid to rush against time before the grade 7 students report to school later this month.
The commission aims to train more than 116,024 teachers. As per reports from TSC, 60, 000 teachers have been trained already and are in tandem with the competency based curriculum (CBC) requirements. Most of these teachers were trained in May 2022.
Several primary school teachers will be among the several teachers who are set to be trained to handle the grade 7 learners.
Initially the government had planned to host junior secondary school learners in high schools. Classes were built and several other preparations done in readiness for the same. However, the government after close consultation made a u turn and opted to retain the grade 6 learners in their current schools to proceed to grade 7.
Those willing to transfer learners to other schools in grade 7 will be allowed to do so. Several teachers with higher qualifications, i.e. diplomas, degrees and TPD certificates , who are qualified to handle junior secondary students have so far been subjected to some slight audit by TSC to confirm their suitability to teach there.
