Knec releases Grade 6 KPSEA samples download
The Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) has issued samples of the KPSEA tests due in November.
Pioneer Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) students will take their final test in primary schools from November 28-30, 2022, before entering junior high in January.
The tests will be held across three days, according to the Knec calendar. Grade 6 students will have a rehearsal on November 25, 2022, like with KCPE exams.
The Grade 6 students will be tested in five subjects. Math, English, Kiswahili, Integrated Science, Art, and Social Studies.
In September, Knec will implement KPSEA national exams in select schools.
Knec’s pilot study will begin on September 28 and terminate on September 30, 2022.
For example, Integrated and Creative Sciences will be part of the KPSEA at the conclusion of elementary school, according to Knec CBA Coordinator Ann Ngatia.
“The exam will be multiple-choice and cover five papers. IS would mix science and technology with Home Science, Agriculture, and Physical Health, while CASS will include art, music, social studies, and religious education (CRE, IRE, and HRE),” she said.
The coordinator said the primary school results will be determined by the School Based Assessment (SBA) and the five-subject summative national test.
“We will have 60% SBA and 40% summative report so we don’t rely on a one-time assessment to establish the learner’s potential,” Ngatia stated.
Ngatia explained that school-based evaluation will take the shape of projects, practicals, portfolios, and oral examinations, with classroom teachers directed by Knec.
Lawrence Karundi, deputy director for secondary education, said junior highs will house junior highs. Seventh and eighth graders will be day students, he said.
“Our concentration is on day schools, not boarding, when it comes to dorms, especially for junior secondary. “The change will allow pupils to stay in their current schools, eliminating the need for boarding,” Karundi remarked.
Ruth Mugambi, deputy director of the State Department for Curriculum Reforms, said Grade 6 candidates will be placed in Junior Secondary Schools based on performance, topics chosen, and eligibility to join day schools.
“Placement will be based on students’ sixth-grade report and elective topics. Students would be told which nearby schools provide the subjects based on ministry requirements, said Mugambi.
