Some 11,000 teaching positions are available as the government works to fill staffing gaps in schools ahead of the implementation of junior secondary in January 2023.

The National Treasury allocated Sh2.5 billion to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in the fiscal year 2022/2023 to recruit new tutors as the country prepares to fully implement the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) beginning this week.

According to TSC boss Nancy Macharia, the commission will immediately begin a competitive recruitment process, with the majority of new teachers going to sub-county schools that admit the most students.

In his budget statement last month , National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani allocated Sh2.5 billion to the TSC for the recruitment of 5,000 permanent teachers in the district.”

“In his budget statement made last week, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani allocated the TSC Sh2.5 billion for the recruitment of 5,000 teachers on permanent terms in the next financial year.

“I wish to assure the country that the commission will immediately embark on the exercise to ensure the teachers report to work as soon as possible to ease the existing shortage,” said Dr Macharia

During the upcoming recruitment, TSC will place a greater emphasis on staffing sub-county secondary schools, which admit the majority of students.

Another Sh1.2 billion has been set aside for the TSC to recruit 6,000 interns to help alleviate the shortage that is still affecting a number of schools.

In the fiscal year 2022/2023, the government has allocated the TSC Sh1.2 billion to recruit 6,000 interns as a stop gap measure to ease the shortage, which stands at 114,581 teachers.

The TSC boss also stated that teachers are prepared to ensure a complete transition as ordered by President Uhuru Kenyatta as schools reopened 2 weeks ago, even as she directs her field officers to be on high alert.

According to her, the commission will begin training over 60,000 teachers on CBC tomorrow.

She stated that over 229,292 primary school teachers and teacher training college tutors have been trained, with an additional 116,024 secondary school teachers to be trained by the end of the year.

The first phase of this training will involve 60,000 teachers drawn from both public and private secondary schools, including special institutions and will be concluded on May 13,” the TSC boss added.

Simultaneously, Education CS George Magoha assured parents that the government has put in place the necessary measures to ensure that there are enough teachers for the CBC rollout.

Secondary schools are severely understaffed, and more teachers will be needed next year when the CBC is implemented in secondary schools, as well as a double intake
